Learning bout mutual funds / stocks
Written at Saturday, February 12, 2011 | back to top

Back again on this blog ! :D
This time I'll share a lil bit information on mutual fund (read : reksadana). Mutual fund is a professionally managed type of collective investment scheme that pools money from many investors and invests typically in investment securities (stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, other mutual funds, other securities, and/or commodities such as precious metals).[1] The mutual fund will have a fund manager that trades (buys and sells) the fund's investments in accordance with the fund's investment objective. (taken from wikipedia)

I'm kinda interested on this stuff since so many people say that this kind of investment gives you higher return than bank saving. From what I read on some forums, you can start investing on mutual funds just by having IDR 1mio ! :) 1 thing for sure if you decide to invest on mutual funds, first you have to set your goal. Either it is for your retirement plan, education or whatever. If you will need the money for more than 10 years then you can put your money on RDS (reksa dana saham) - I will only use indonesian abbreviation here to avoid confusion. If your goal is need to be achieved less than 10 years then it's better to invest on RDPT / RDPU (reksa dana pendapatan tetap / reksa dana pasar uang) or RDC (reksa dana campuran) for med-term 3-5 years.

Anyway what I want to discuss here is about RDS. Some important things you need to know is :
  1. Choose whether to invest right from the investor management company or from the bank.
  2. Find out whether the MI (investment manager) is reliable and trustworthy enough.
  3. Choose the product.
If you choose to invest via bank, go to bapepam to check if the bank you choose have an APERD license from the government (agen penjual efek reksa dana). And then find out the products each bank sold because the products sold may be vary for each bank. Then this is the next thing you need to know :
NAB (nilai aktiva bersih) : it means the market price for the product.
Let's assume you want to invest IDR 1 mio and the NAB for the product is IDR 1000. So you will have :
    1,000,000/1,000 = 1,000 UP (unit penyertaan)
After few months, the NAB of the product goes to IDR 1,200. So, your NAV (net asset value) would be :
    1,200 * 1,000 = IDR 1,200,000 means you gain 20% profit => (1,200,000-1,000,000)/1,000,000 * 100%
Now, you may want to know when is the right time to buy this product. You can use the chart from yahoo finance and then on the technical indicators drop down choose Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and fill the tab with 20, 50 and 100. After that choose Relative Strength Index (RSI) and click draw. Now you will see a 4-coloured lines.
  1. If the blue "IHSG" line is below the red line (EMA 20) means the price is so-so.
  2. If the blue "IHSG" line is below the green line (EMA 50) means the price is quite cheap.
  3. If the blue "IHSG" line is below the yellow line (EMA 100) means it's really cheap !
RSI is the confirmation for the EMA graphic, if the value of the RSI is above 70 it means overbought ( overprice ), but if it is below 30 means oversold ( underprice ). The RSI shows whether the RD price is cheap or not. This is only a rule of thumb, so use it at your own risk ;)

Remember, in this kind of investment you should not be panic when the IHSG or the NAB is going down. What you have to do is buy more when the price is cheap and wait till it goes up again (oh, it always tends to go up). So you have to be patient, just invest regularly, close your eyes (except if there's a really big change or situation going on in the market) and wait till it's ready to be harvested ;)

Let's invest for our future ! ;)
